Samsung M2510: Everyone’s Music Phone

The Samsung M2510 is a very simple phone. The shape and form is nothing we have not seen in a slider phone and the overall composition is that of a standard GSM device. But the real meat of this device does not lie in its outer appearance (though you do get a nice choice of colors; the blue and black themes do look appealing to the eyes), but instead, the value of this phone shines best when you pop in your favorite pair of earphones and listen to audio quality that only high-end media devices can deliver. Yep, you get that kind of quality in a low-budget GSM phone. The secret is in Samsung's hardware and DNS engine (more on that later).

Size, Visuals and Audio

This phone is small, light and easy to carry 'if not a little fat for some. But since it's a slider, the thickness is not that big a deal, it is expected actually. The dimensions of this phone are 99.5 x 46.5 x 15.7 mm. Even at 15.7 mm, the phone's thickness does not make it uncomfortable to use; it also gets thinner to hold when you slide the screen up. The weight of this phone is a manageable 90.5 grams, a perfect weight for a portable music player that will not get in your way when you are talking a light jog.

The screen on the M2510 is only 2.2 inches and has a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. Its standard fare for a GSM device, but those hoping to squeeze a little video viewing or html browsing functionality might want to pass up on this phone. The best this can offer is WAP, and while it can play MP4 and 3GP, do not expect to get high quality visuals. At least image viewing is fine, and you can get nice details thanks to the 256 thousand color display capability.

The audio quality of this phone is greatly enhanced by the Digital Natural Sound engine which takes out most of the noise and leaves you with crystal clear audio quality. The phone does have speakers, but the best way to appreciate the quality is by plugging in your favorite earphones on the 3.5mm audio jack port. The phone supports playback for MP3, e-AAC+ and WMA files.

1 Mega Pixel Cam

Despite all the focus on music playback Samsung still crammed a 1 mega pixel camera on this phone (proving once again the joke that the camera is the essential feature to squeeze into a mobile phone). Anyway, despite being low-end compared to the common 2 to 3 mega pixel cameras more commonly used these days, 1.5 mega pixel still delivers good quality images. 1280 x 1024 pixel images are still good for printing at least.

The Battery

Battery is always an important factor for basic phones, being able to go without charging for a while is a great feature. Sadly, the Samsung M2510's battery longevity is not as long as that of other mobile phones. The 800 mAh lithium-ion battery can only run the phone for 360 hours on standby and 8 hours of talk time on a full charge.
